Drawing an Acorn
Step 1:
As we go through this guide to drawing an acorn, we’ll start with the general outline of the acorn. First, we’ll draw the bottom half of the glans and draw two curved lines at a fairly sharp point at the end. This tassel tip will have a small square section sticking out. Once you’ve drawn the bottom half of the tassel, we’ll outline the top.
This top section looks like a small hat sitting on top of the tassel, and we’ll draw this outline using a curved, bumpy line. The inside of the tassel will be blank with no details, but in the following steps, we will add more details and definitions.
Step 2:
In this second step of your acorn drawing, we will finish the outline of the small ‘cap’ of the acorn. The outline will extend into the glans to form its edge. This border will be drawn with many small connected curved lines, as shown in the reference image. Using these smaller curved lines, we will create a rougher look for the texture of this part of the glans. Once you are happy with how this diagram looks, we will move on to the next part of the guide.
Step 3:
Next, we’ll add texture to the acorn hat in this third step of our guide on how to draw an acorn. We mentioned in the previous part that this section of the glans is rough, so we will illustrate this aspect now.
We’ll achieve this look by drawing many small, angular shapes that connect in an almost tiled pattern. We’ll only draw the texture for one tassel section, but we’ll fill in the empty sections in the following steps.
Step 4:
This fourth step of your tassel drawing will see you adding more of that rough texture for the top of the tassel. To do this, continue your previous step and draw other small shapes that connect. This texture portion will go on the left side of the glans, and these shapes will be smaller and closer together to give it a denser look. When you’ve drawn this section, we’ll finish the last bits of texture while adding some final details in the next part.
Step 5:

Now it’s time to complete all the details and final touches for this step of our guide to drawing an acorn. These last details will prepare you for the final stage, where you can have a bit of color! First, we’ll finish by drawing the rest of the texture details for the tasseled hat. Then, once you’re done, you can add long, slightly curved lines to the bottom part of the tassel to give that area more texture.
Finally, we’ll finish the design by adding the border and the bent stem above the tassel. There are also fun ways to customize this design further. You can draw a background to finish it off, including a hungry squirrel or an oak tree background to show what that acorn can become. What will you choose for your image?
Step 6:

Regarding the coloring in our version of this acorn design, we decided to keep the colors darker and more realistic. To achieve this, we use shades of light and dark brown instead of just one or two shades of brown. It helps give the image a more vibrant look, and if you like this style, you can try using colors similar to the ones we used. You can also use completely different colors, so let your creativity run free as you complete it!
More ways to make your acorn design unique
Make your acorn sketch even more meaningful with these fun ideas to try! We all know acorns grow on trees, and that’s one shape you could add to this drawing of an acorn. You might make it look like that acorn is still on the tree. It could be done by changing the angle of the glans. It would also allow you to add leaves and more acorns in the background. What part of the tree would you add if you did this? Another way to display this acorn in its natural habitat would be to display it on the ground.
This way, you could make the acorn look like it just fell out of a tree. Underneath, you can draw dirt or grass to make it look like a natural area. You can even add small plants, like flowers, around it to make the photo even prettier! Squirrels love acorns, and adding one to this acorn drawing would be a great way to make it instantly cuter! By adding a squirrel, you can draw it in a realistic style or make it more cartoonish. It would depend on your preferences for this image, but any approach would look great!
Either way, you can find squirrel pictures online to help you draw. Another fun way to make this acorn sketch more unique would be to turn it into a cartoon character. There are simple yet effective ways to do this! You can draw a face on the glans, take it a step further, and give it arms and legs. It would allow you to put him in funny poses or situations. How would you pose this cartoon tassel if you were to follow this idea for your drawing?
